Middle School Title

The following are services provided by City of Mountain View departments for middle school-aged young people. They include after school programs, camps, classes, employment services, leadership, lessons, outreach, library services, recreation and volunteering opportunities.

AFTER SCHOOL


Library Teen Zone
Special re-designed area of the Library dedicated to teens. Space includes new books, new media, new magazines, internet access, tables for group study and lounge seating ringing the fireplace. Homework and research assistance provided in the after school hours by Library staff, including high school-aged homework assistants.

Tween Time
After school program offered at local public middle schools through a partnership with Mountain View/Whisman School District. District funds homework center; City funds crafts, sports, games, and clubs.

CAMPS


Dreams and Futures
Students attend a camp which includes problem-solving, communication skills, tutoring, computer activities and sports. Transportation to the various activities is included. Other activities are facilitated for participants throughout the year. Two sessions are held each summer.

Lego Engineering Camps
Half-day camps focused on fun and learning using building and engineering concepts.

RECing Crew
Summer day camp featuring arts and crafts, games, sports, special events and field trips.

Theater in the Park
Two-week theater camps focusing on theater games and skills offered in conjunction with Peninsula Youth Theater. The end-of-camp performances are held at Park Stage.

Youth Sports Camps
Week-long sessions focusing on skill development and fun in baseball, volleyball, soccer, basketball, street hockey, flag football, or multi-sport.

CLASSES


Bicycle Safety Rodeos
A program that educates students regarding rules of the road and value of bicycle licensing in addition to safety and use of helmets. Based on school requests and available staff resources.

Deer Hollow Farm
Deer Hollow Farm is a working homestead and educational center where school classes, community groups and families can observe, explore and participate in a family farm.

Science at Shoreline
Environmental interpretive program cosponsored by the City, Alza Corporation, San Francisco Marine Science Institute and Crittenden Middle School; utilizes middle school students to act as interpreters for third grade school children visiting Shoreline Park in Mountain View.

Youth Classes
A variety of special interest classes including cartooning, dance, fencing, team sports, martial arts, theater, safety, crafts, yoga, cooking, and driver's education.

EMPLOYMENT


Groundhog Job Shadowing Day
Coordinate participation in the nation-wide Junior Achievement event, bringing local youth in to shadow City employees at their job sites. Employees conduct activities to clearly demonstrate job skills and their corresponding educational requirements.

LEADERSHIP


Leaders in Training Program

Library Teen Advisory Group
Group of Mountain View youth who advise City Library staff on the creation of the Teen Zone, suggest materials for purchase, suggest design of website, and suggest teen-centered programming.

Mayor's Youth Conference
Day-long conference for Mountain View youth sponsored by the Mayor, the Youth Advisory Group and City staff. This annual event includes guest speakers, small group activities and large group activities built around a particular theme. The conference provides an opportunity for youth to learn new skills and share their thoughts with City Council Members and other community leaders.

LESSONS


Golf Lessons
Shoreline Golf Links offers clinics and classes for youth ages 8 to 17 years.

Swim Lessons
The City of Mountain View is an American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program with some additional enhancements to provide the highest quality of swim instruction available. Our classes are taught by qualified and Lifeguard Training-certified instructors. Classes may have volunteers or aides assigned to help increase the attention and practice your child receives. Lessons are tailored to age and skill level.

Tennis Lessons
Tennis lessons for players of all ages and levels are provided through the City of Mountain View Recreation Department. Participants must furnish their own tennis racquets and wear tennis shoes.

LIBRARY SERVICES


Class Visits—Children's Services
Local school classes visit Library for storytelling, book talks, research and instruction.

Librology
An original Mountain View Library game which introduces library skills in a self-directed treasure hunt format with staff coaching.

Reading Day Festival
Community leaders share favorite books aloud, special performances, reading crafts, refreshments, a book fair and the reading mascot Readeroo. Funded by the Mountain View Library Foundation.

Reading Families
A reading incentive program for the whole family. The Friends of the Library provide a free book suitable for all ages to every family that reads, reads aloud and records books read in a personalized "Reading Families" booklet.

OUTREACH


D.A.R.E. Program
The D.A.R.E. Program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is an anti-alcohol, anti-drug, gang and violence program designed by Mountain View Officers with a primary focus on drug education. The D.A.R.E. Program is taught by School Resource Officers at the fourth through seventh grade levels at Mountain View schools.

Gang Suppression Team
Enforcement of gang-related issues through the Police Department's Field Operations Division. SRO's and other officers address gang-related issues, providing prevention, intervention and enforcement services. Service includes verbal counseling with youth and parents as needed, presentation to parents regarding signs of gang activities and other outreach.

PAL (Police Activities League)
Mountain View's Police Activities League (PAL) fosters bonds of mutual trust and understanding between police officers and young people by interacting in non-confrontational settings. PAL's mission is to divert youth away from gangs and crime by providing alternative, supervised activities, including educational, cultural and recreational events. School Resources Officers
Two full-time Police Officers who make contact with schools (teachers, administrators and students). The individual serves as a counselor, friend and Officer and coordinates youth diversion programs and gang/crisis intervention and citizenship. Also responsible for teaching the D.A.R.E. program.

Some Bunny Cares
A support program for traumatized children which provides new stuffed bunnies and handmade quilts for comfort. These are also provided to El Camino Hospital for the Emergency Room.

RECREATION


Noontime Program
Recreation activities, including indoor and outdoor games, and an intramural sports program at local schools during noon recess.

Recreation Swim

Skate Park
The Skate Park is a non-supervised facility reserved exclusively or skaters age 12 and under from 9:30—11:30 a.m. All skaters must wear helmets, kneepads and elbow pads. All bikes (including BMX bikes) and scooters are prohibited at this facility.

VOLUNTEERING


City of Mountain View Volunteer Services
The City of Mountain View Volunteer Services program provides volunteer opportunities in City departments, for City projects and events and can refer individuals to outside community groups that offer volunteer options.Some positions may have age limits but some are open to youth.
