Permit Issuance Policy

Exempted Work—2007 California Building Code*

1. Single-story detached accessory buildings used as tool and storage sheds, playhouses and similar uses, provided the projected roof area does not exceed 120 square feet. Consult with Planning for zoning requirements.

2. Fences not over 6' in height. Consult with Planning for zoning requirements.

3. Movable cases, counters and partitions not over 5'9" in height.

4. Retaining walls which are not over 4' in height measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, unless supporting a surcharge or impounding Class I, II or III-A liquids.

5. Water tanks supported directly upon grade if the capacity does not exceed 5,000 gallons and the ratio of height to diameter or width does not exceed 2:1. Consult with Planning for zoning requirements.]

6. Platforms, walks and driveways, including concrete work, not more than 30" above grade and not over any basement or story below. Consult with Planning for zoning requirements and Public Works for off-site improvements requirements.

7. Painting, papering and similar finish work.

8. Prefabricated swimming pools accessory to a single-family residence in which the pool walls are entirely above the adjacent grade and the capacity does not exceed 5,000 gallons. Consult with Planning for zoning requirements.

9. Window replacements in the same opening, when window opening is not modified and there is no framing construction required.

10. Water closet and sink removal and replacement, provided such repairs do not involve or require the replacement or rearrangement of valves, pipes or fixtures.

11. Replacement of light fixtures and outlets, provided existing wiring is used.

12. Roofing repairs under 100 square feet (one roofing square).

*Unless otherwise exempted, separate plumbing, electrical and mechanical permits will be required for the above building permit exempted items.
