Are you open during the lunch hour?
Yes, the City of Mountain View Employee Services Department is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. including the lunch hour.

Can I submit a cover letter, resume, and letter(s) of recommendation with my application materials?
For some positions, a resume and/or other supplemental documentation is required in addition to a City application. Please review the "To Apply" section of the job announcement for required documents.

The City of Mountain View recruitments are highly competitive, so you may wish to consider including additional materials that show your strengths and qualifications for the position(s) you are applying. Please note that cover letters and resumes may not substitute for a completed City application. You will still need to submit a thoroughly completed City application to be considered for the position.

Can I submit my completed application on-line?
Yes, you can submit an application on-line for open positions by visiting CalOpps.org.

Can I turn in one application for more than one current opening?
Yes, but you are required to submit an application for each position you are interested in applying for.  You may submit copies of your application with the position that you are applying for listed on the top portion of your application.

Do you accept postmarks?
No, only applications that are received in the Employee Services Department by 5:00 p.m. on the final filing date will be considered for the position.

We do, however, accept faxed copies of your application as long as we receive the fax by the application deadline date.  You may fax your application to: (650) 903-6054.  Always follow-up when faxing to make sure your documents have been received.  We may ask you to submit the original application, so please keep a copy of the original.

Do you keep applications on file so that I do not have to turn in a new application each time I apply for a specific position?
No. We suggest that you make copies of your application in case you wish to submit an application for future openings.

Does the City of Mountain View contribute to Social Security?
No, the City does not contribute to Social Security which means earnings from City of Mountain View jobs are not subject to Social Security withholdings, except for Federal Medicare.

Upon retirement, this may affect the amount of Social Security you receive.  For more information, visit www.socialsecurity.gov/form1945.

How can I obtain a copy of the job description for the position I'm applying for?

How long does it take to be notified after the closing date?

I forgot to turn in my typing certificate with my application and the final filing date has passed.  Can I still turn in the certificate?
Employee Services strongly urges you to submit your typing certificate along with your application prior to the filing deadline date.  If you are unable to obtain the certificate prior to the final filing date, you may fax or deliver a typing certificate after the final filing date has passed.  However, Employee Services cannot guarantee that late submittals will be accepted and processed.

I have a disability and may need some help with the application process, what do I do?
As explained in the job announcement for each position, candidates with a disability, which may require special assistance in any phase of the application or testing process, should advise the Employee Services Department upon the submittal of their application.  Documentation of the need for accommodation must accompany the request.  Candidates requesting accommodation may be required to demonstrate their ability to perform the essential functions of the position.  Copies of these essential functions are available from the Employee Services Department.

I have missed the final filing deadline.  Can I still turn in my application?
No, we do not accept applications that are received after the application filing deadline date.

If I don't see a position open that I am interested in, can I turn in an application for a position that may become available in the future?
No, the Employee Services Department can only accept and process applications submitted for current open positions.

If you are interested in a position that may open in the future, please sign up for the City's E-Notify subscription service for automated e-mail notifications of new City job openings.

On a job announcement, what does "open until filled" mean?
The position will remain open until an offer is made and accepted.  The Employee Services department will review the applications and forward them on a weekly basis to the hiring department for review.  The hiring department may conduct interviews for the position at any time

The position that I am applying for requires a typing certificate from a business school, job training center, employment agency or other related agency.  Where can I find a place that will certify my typing speed?
We have a list of local centers that administer typing tests and can provide you with a typing certificate verifying your typing speed.  You will need to contact the center of your choice to schedule an appointment. Please note, online typing certificates will not be accepted.

What happens after I turn in my application?
All eligible applications are forwarded to the Personnel Analyst in Employee Services assigned to conduct the recruitment for the position you are applying. After the application filing date closes, the Personnel Analyst will screen all the applications that were received on or before the filing deadline date. Applications will then be forwarded to the hiring department for a second review.

Depending on the number of applications received, this process may take two to six weeks to complete. All candidates who submit an application for a position will receive a letter from the Employee Services Department indicating the status of their application once the review process is complete.
