Patrol

Patrol officers patrol Mountain View in marked and unmarked cars, motorcycles, on foot, and occasionally even on bicycles. Our patrol officers come from a diverse background: male and female, and different racial and ethnic backgrounds.

When you call 9-1-1 and a police response is required, it's a patrol officer who will be dispatched to your location.

Patrol Operations
Mountain View deploys 6 teams of patrol officers. Each team is supervised by a sergeant, with an "agent" (the rank below a sergeant) assisting. The 6 teams work shifts to provide 24x7 police services, with the heaviest deployment during times with more calls for service. Officers are assigned to overlapping shifts--either Monday-Thursday (10-hour shifts) or Friday-Sunday (12.5-hour shifts). Shift overlap ensures that there are officers on the streets at all times.

Community-oriented Policing
Community-oriented policing is a team-oriented approach to problem solving with the police and members of the community working together towards a common goal.  Studies show that when residents, police and other city departments cooperate to clean up local neighborhoods, address city ordinance violations, and reduce petty crime, there's a marked reduction in serious crime.

To solve community problems, the MVPD will often enlist the aid of other city departments, such as the City Attorney's Office, Code Enforcement, Public Works, Fire and Community Development, as well as county agencies including Probation, Parole, Health, District Attorney, Mental Health, Alcoholic Beverage Control and Social Services.

Police Beats
Our patrol officers are assigned to beats (segments of the city). There are five beats in Mountain View.
