Officers stop drivers for sobriety assessments at a DUI checkpoint. How serious a problem is driving under the influence (DUI)? Extremely serious: 30% of Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash during their lives. This easily preventable problem can lead to extreme consequences: - Public embarrassment
- Expensive lawsuits
- Manslaughter conviction
- Jail sentence
- Injuries or deaths
Often people believe they're safe to drive when they're not. Many drivers don't want to admit they're over the limit and should not drive. Alcohol impairs judgment. If you were sober when you decide whether or not you're safe to drive, it wouldn't be so difficult. You need to take this into account before you start drinking. And keep it in mind when your friends tell you they've "only had a few drinks." Medications & Other Hazards Are prescription and over-the-counter medications a traffic-safety problem? Yes. You can be arrested for driving under the influence of any substance. You are responsible for determining when you can drive safely. Follow instructions on all medications. If it says it will make you drowsy, don't drive. Even if your sleep medicine normally takes 45 minutes to 'kick in,' do not take it before driving home. When taking new medication, or increasing a dose, try it at home first to determine its effects before you drive. When you are behind the wheel, being sleepy is dangerous. Although most people know how dangerous drinking and driving is, they may not fully realize that drowsy driving can be just as fatal as driving drunk. Like drugs or alcohol, sleepiness slows reaction time, decreases awareness, impairs judgement and increases your risk of a crash. | | Traffic Stats | DUI Arrests | | Year | Arrests | | 2007 | 283 | | 2006 | 338 | | 2005 | 266 | | 2004 | 315 | | 2003 | 326 | | 2002 | 317 | Drunk Driving Beer is the #1 intoxicant in DUI stops & alcohol-related crashes. Over 1 million Americans are arrested for DUI every year (about 1 driver in 140). 17,000+ Americans die each year in alcohol-related crashes. 40% of California traffic fatalities are alcohol related. If you're intoxicated, you may be unable to make a sound decision about driving. Don't take chances—if you plan to drive, don't drink. Source: Mothers Against Drunk Driving | | | | |

If a police officer pulls me over, can I refuse to participate in field sobriety exercises? Field sobriety exercises help an officer determine if you might be too intoxicated to drive. They are one of many indications that officers use to assess your ability to safely operate a vehicle. Field sobriety exercises occur at the time you are pulled over. You have the right to refuse to participate in field sobriety exercises. However, if you are arrested for driving while intoxicated, you must submit to a chemical test to determine your blood alcohol level (BAC). If you refuse to submit to the chemical test once you have been arrested, you will automatically lose your license for 6 months despite the outcome of the criminal charges.

I'm drunk and I don't want to drive home. Will the police give me a ride home? Unfortunately, the police department does not have the resources to drive intoxicated citizens home. We recommend that you call a sober friend or a taxi.
