Accident Reporting Requirements
Accidents with Injuries
If there are injuries, even minor injuries, you must report traffic accidents to the police. MVPD will report the accident to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for you.
Accidents without Injuries
If there are no injuries, but there is more than $750 worth of damage, then you must report the accident to the (DMV). Ask you insurance company if they report to the DMV for you.
You do not have to report an accident to the police department, unless there are injuries. Just exchange identifying information with the other driver(s) and notify your insurance company.
 Collision Scene Checklist- If anyone is injured, call 9-1-1, or ask a bystander to call for you.
- If no one is injured and your vehicle can be safely moved from the roadway, move it. Otherwise, leave it where it is.
- If you can safely move yourself to the curb or sidewalk, do so.
- Non-injury accidents only: If you want a police report, call non-emergency incidents: 650/903-6395. Otherwise, exchange identifying information with the other driver(s).

What should I do if I hit a parked car?
Stop your vehicle at the nearest location that will not impede traffic or jeopardize the safety of other motorists. You are responsible for notifying the owner of the vehicle you struck of the following information:
1. Your (driver's) name, address and phone number
2. For the vehicle you were driving, the vehicle owner's name, address and phone number
Therefore, when hitting a parked car, you must immediately do one of the following:
1. Locate the owner of the other vehicle and provide the information indicated above. If requested, present your driver's license and vehicle registration.
2. Leave in a conspicuous place on the other vehicle a written notice providing the information indicated above.
3. If you want a police report, notify the police department: 650/903-6395.

Whenever there are injuries, even minor injuries, you must report an accident to the police department. However, it's only necessary to get a police report at the scene if there are major injuries or fatalities. In either case, we'll notify the DMV for you.

While driving my car, I struck and damaged property (other than another car). What do I do?
Stop your vehicle at the nearest location that will not impede traffic or jeopardize the safety of other motorists. You are responsible for locating the property owner and providing the following information:
1. Your (driver's) name, address and phone number.
2. For the vehicle you were driving, the vehicle owner's name, address and phone number.
